The Richie Brace is trademarked type of ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) designed to provide support and stability to individuals with a range of foot and ankle conditions named after its developer, Dr. Doug Richie, DPM. It was developed in 1996.
The primary use of the Richie Brace is the management of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (or adult acquired flat foot or progressive collapsing deformity of the foot) when it has progressed beyond what a standard or typical foot orthotic can manage, especially those with excessive “overpronation” and higher supination resistance. It is also used for other problems such as chronic ankle instability and ankle osteoarthritis.

Personal Opinion on the Richie Brace
Doug Richie was a guest on our podcast, PodChatLive in which we discussed the Richie Brace:
The biggest problem I see with the Richie Brace is not getting people into it soon enough. I like to describe Stage 2 Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction as a “medical emergency”, meaning that is you need to get on top of it urgently to prevent it progressing to Stage 3. When you get to Stage 3 and beyond, there is a high probability that surgery is going to be needed and there is a possible long term disability associated with that as joint fusions are commonly needed.
